The Good Hair EditGuide 08

Build a colour-care routine you will actually follow

A useful home-care plan should fit your colour, your hair and the time you want to spend. It starts with a few specific questions before you leave the salon.

The short answer

Ask your stylist for a simple wash, conditioning and styling plan after your service. Confirm product directions, any service-specific instructions and what to do when the colour begins to change.

Ask for the smallest useful routine

Explain what you currently use, how often you wash and what you usually do to style your hair. Ask which part of that routine needs changing for the service you have had.

If several products are suggested, ask what each one does and which is the first priority. A routine is easier to follow when you understand the purpose of every step and the directions on the product.

Get instructions for your actual service

Ask about washing, conditioning, styling tools and any instructions that apply after the appointment. Follow the directions supplied for the products and services used on your hair.

If swimming, travel or a different routine is coming up, mention it before your appointment. Your stylist can explain what is relevant to the agreed colour and how to plan around it.

Check before adding a toning product

Purple and other colour-depositing products are not a universal next step. Ask whether a toning product is useful for your shade, how to use the specific product and when to stop or contact the salon.

Do not keep increasing frequency because the result is not what you expected. Share a clear photo and explain the product and directions you followed so the salon can help you decide the next step.

Know what your next appointment is for

Roots, tone, placement and a haircut may need attention at different points. Ask which change should prompt you to get in touch and what service the salon expects you to book next.

Keep a note of the agreed appointment name. If your goal changes substantially, ask before booking the same refresh: a new result may involve a different service.

Keep it practical

Your checklist

  • Write down the recommended routine and product directions.
  • Ask which steps matter most for your colour.
  • Explain upcoming swimming, travel or styling changes.
  • Record the name and purpose of the next service.

Common questions

Should everyone with blonde hair use purple shampoo?

Ask your stylist whether it fits your specific tone and routine. If recommended, follow the directions for that product rather than a universal schedule.

Is a colour refresh the same as a root appointment?

Not necessarily. Describe what you want changed and confirm the service name with the salon.

Your next step

Good advice. A clear next step.

Leave with a short routine, clear directions and a named next step. Ask when something changes rather than adding products by guesswork.
