Extensions: what to ask about maintenance and removal

The first installation is one appointment in a longer plan. Before deciding, understand what keeping and eventually removing the extensions will involve.

The short answer

Ask for the full plan: hair, installation, maintenance, home care and removal. Confirm which method is suitable and which services the salon can provide before ordering hair or booking maintenance.

Confirm the method and existing hair

Tell the salon whether you are considering new extensions or already wear them. For existing extensions, share the method, who installed them and what information you have about the hair.

Ask whether maintenance or removal of that system can be accommodated. Do not assume a salon can work with every method or that an installation service is the right slot for a move-up.

Break the quote into stages

Ask which parts of the quote cover the hair, colour matching, installation and finishing. Then ask which future appointments are separate and how their prices are determined.

Clarify ordering and deposit terms before purchasing hair. A full picture helps you compare the ongoing commitment with the budget you want to maintain.

Match upkeep to your real schedule

Discuss how often the recommended method needs professional attention and what determines that interval for you. Tell the stylist about travel, activities and the return schedule you can manage.

Ask for the specific washing, brushing, drying and styling instructions for the chosen system. Follow the method and product directions provided by your installer rather than assuming all extension care is the same.

Know how to ask for help

Ask what changes should prompt you to contact the salon before the planned maintenance visit. Keep the method and installer details so you can explain your concern clearly.

Discuss professional removal before installation. Confirm who can provide it, how it is booked and what cost or time to expect. Do not improvise removal because a maintenance slot is inconvenient.

Keep it practical

Your checklist

  • Method and installer details, if you already wear extensions.
  • Separate prices for hair, installation, maintenance and removal.
  • Home-care instructions for the chosen system.
  • A return plan that fits your calendar.

Common questions

Can I bring hair I bought online?

Check with the salon before purchasing. Suitability, method, matching and the terms for using supplied hair need to be agreed directly.

Can I book maintenance if another salon installed it?

Ask first and provide the method and installation details. The salon must confirm whether it can accommodate the work.
