What to discuss before a curly or textured haircut

Your usual pattern and the way you style it matter more than finding the perfect hair-type label. A little preparation helps the salon understand what you need.

The short answer

Ask the salon about the stylist and appointment that suit your hair before booking. Bring photos of your usual pattern and explain how you normally wear it. Follow the preparation instructions the salon gives you.

Start with the right conversation

Tell the salon about your hair length, the result you want and whether you mostly wear it in its natural pattern, stretched or heat-styled. Ask which stylist and appointment they recommend for that combination.

A profile can introduce a stylist’s interests, but it is not a complete list of techniques or services. Confirm the approach directly if you are looking for a specific cutting method or finish.

Show the hair you live with

Bring photographs from different ordinary days: after washing, on a day you like it and on a day you find difficult. Explain which part of the shape or routine you want to change.

Mention differences you notice between areas of your hair. You do not need to diagnose them or choose a numbered curl label. Describe what you see and how it affects the result you want.

Talk about length in the finish you wear

Explain how you want the finished hair to sit and which lengths you want to preserve. If the apparent length changes between wet, stretched and naturally styled hair, point that out during the conversation.

Ask how the agreed shape will be assessed and finished. Confirm what is included in the appointment, rather than assuming a particular dry-cut or styling method is offered.

Ask how to arrive

Preparation requirements can differ by service and stylist. Ask whether to arrive washed, detangled, naturally styled or with your usual products, then follow the instructions for your appointment. Avoid substituting generic online advice for those instructions.

Tell the salon about extensions, protective styles or extra time needed to prepare the hair. If detangling or removal is part of the work, confirm that it can be accommodated before the day.

Keep it practical

Your checklist

  • Photos of your usual pattern and desired outline.
  • Your wash and styling routine, including tools.
  • Any removal or detangling work that may need extra time.
  • Confirmed arrival instructions and appointment inclusions.

Common questions

Do I need to arrive with product-free hair?

Ask your selected stylist. Preparation varies with the service and the approach they plan to use.

Can I request a specific cutting technique?

Yes. Describe it before booking so the salon can confirm whether it is offered and which appointment is appropriate.
